Owens Corning’s unbonded loosefill insulation products (AttiCat®, ProCat®, PROPINK® L77) use materials that are in abundant supply and leverage high levels of recycled content. Sand is a major raw material in glass manufacturing and Owens Corning is committed to seek out sources in reasonable proximity to its operations. Purchasing recycled glass prevents material from being sent to landfill while serving as an outlet for glass that is no longer in service. Unbonded loosefill products use a negligible amount of organic inputs and therefore are exempt from the USDA organic certification requirement.

Depending on what we find during our energy-audit, we may recommend either adding insulation on top of your old insulation or replacing your insulation completely. Typically, the R-value of attic-insulation decreases when it is exposed to moisture because moisture flattens insulation, destroying the air pockets responsible for trapping hot air. It’s okay to add insulation on top of old, flattened insulation, but if we find rat-droppings or other signs of contamination such as mold or mildew, then we highly recommend removing the old insulation and addressing those problems before adding new insulation. A John Moore pest control expert can ensure all rodents are excluded from your home so that your new insulation won’t risk being contaminated.

Attic Insulation FAQ In an unfinished attic, the goal of insulation is to keep the rooms below cool in summer and warm in winter. That means insulating the attic floor only—not the walls—and having vents in the roof. With a finished attic, insulation must help keep the attic areas comfortable.

40SQFT Cell Insulation Structural insulated panels are layered pieces of hard foam insulation attached to either plywood or oriented strand board. These panels are very strong, inexpensive and energy efficient, and it’s possible to cut them to fit just about any type of attic design. Since structural insulated panels are so easy to install, you’ll spend less money when hiring a professional to complete the installation. R-values for structural insulated panels vary depending on how thick the panels are and the climate where the panels are installed.

When moist air touches a cold surface, some of the moisture may leave the air and condense, or become liquid. If moisture condenses inside a wall, or in your attic, you will not be able to see the water, but it can cause a number of problems. Adding insulation can either cause or cure a moisture problem. When you insulate a wall, you change the temperature inside the wall. That can mean that a surface inside the wall, such as the sheathing behind your siding, will be much colder in the winter than it was before you insulated. This cold surface could become a place where water vapor traveling through the wall condenses and leads to trouble. The same thing can happen within your attic or under your house. On the other hand, the new temperature profile could prevent condensation and help keep your walls or attic drier than they would have been.
