Rolls & Batts Ask the Community Blown-in cellulose is the most common alternative to fiberglass and is sometimes used in conjunction with fiberglass. Cellulose is popular because it is a more natural material that is usually made from recycled newspaper, cardboard or sometimes a combined mixture of each. Most cellulose is treated by a fire retardant called borate to increase its resistance to flame and to prevent house fires. Borate also makes it resistant to mold, mildew, and pests. For those looking for an eco-friendly insulation, cellulose is a more natural choice over man-made materials like fiberglass. Because of its green status, its recycled content and its benign impact on the environment as a whole, this type of blown-in insulation is more costly than its fiberglass counterpart. A 19 lb. package of blow-in cellulose, which covers approximately 40 square feet of space at the minimally recommended R-value, is around $28 – $30. Compare this to the table above where one package of blown-in fiberglass will cost you roughly the same, but cover nearly 150 square feet of space. That’s nearly one fourth as much coverage for a comparable cost.

Repiping Services There was a widely publicized study conducted by Oak Ridge Laboratories in 1991 that said that loose fill fiberglass insulation lost a lot of its insulation value once temperatures dropped below 20 degrees, making loose fill fiberglass an inferior product when compared to cellulose.  I contacted Andre Omer Desjarlais at Oak Ridge Laboratories about this issue, and he said: “This was true 20 years ago but all fiberglass manufacturers have changed their products appreciably since then and this is simply no longer an issue.”  I also contacted several insulation manufacturers about this, and they said the same thing and sent me some great information, which I posted on my website many years ago; click any of these links to read the documents from Certainteed, Johns Manville, or Owens Corning.  Loose fill fiberglass insulation will still experience convection, but not nearly as much as old fiberglass used to.

Cold Weather Foaming New Home Builders Over $500 Additions & Remodels Correct R-value A material’s thermal resistance is measured by R-value. Because each of these loose-fill insulation materials has a different R-value, you’ll need to install them at different densities in order to achieve an adequate level of insulation. You’ll also need to adjust for the amount of settling that will occur over time and affect the installed R-value. Cellulose loses 20% of its R-value, so you should add 20 percent more in an attic during installation. The settling percentage of fiberglass and mineral wool is minimal and doesn’t affect thermal performance.

I met with the owner of the company, Dumitru, to talk about this. He didn’t use his imaging thermometer to show that there was more than trace insulation in the walls or take up my offer to open another hole to look. At one point he suggested, with a straight face, that I cut open a wall his crew had worked on and add insulation myself. In the end, Dumitru insisted that because I trusted Charlie’s advice and ok’d the work, they had to charge me for it even though little insulation had been added. Despite the small discount he gave me, I’m out over $1500.
