Green Homes and ENERGY STAR Duct Sealing & Insulation @ $5.00 per linear foot up to $450 Remodelers The reason for this is that in an attic space the foam needs to be sprayed directly onto the ceiling boards of the room underneath. This means that you need to remove any flooring and existing material. If you have insulating bats then this is a lot easier than the loose blown materials, which can be very messy and time consuming. If your blown cellulose of fibreglass is old and not very think then this may well be a good time to consider switching to a spray foam insulator.

To qualify for an air sealing rebate, you must select an approved contractor who will complete the air sealing according to all rebate, Building Performance Institute (BPI) and code requirements. A minimum of 20 percent reduction in cubic feet per minute (measured as CFM50) is required to receive an air sealing rebate. The reduction measures the improvement in the air-tightness of your home. Your contractor will test before and after installation to determine CFM50, which is a measurement of air flow in your home in relation to building pressure. Rebates are paid per CFM50 reduction and customers are limited to one rebate per household, up to $400. Additional requirements apply. Contact an approved contractor to learn more about air sealing rebates.

Ask for directions from the store you rented it from on how to operate the machine. You can use duct tape to secure the hose to the blower and the nozzle to the hose if the blower isn’t equipped with a locking mechanism to keep the hose together.

Be On the Show Professional Support Chip Johnson Jim Souhan 1. Fix roof leaks. Water is insulation’s enemy. It creates a breeding ground for mold and mildew and ruins the air-trapping pockets that block heat flow. Look for water stains on the roof sheathing or damp or moldy spots on attic joists and existing insulation as a clue to where leaks might be.
Easements It’s time to use better insulation. The ceiling plane or attic floor should be thoroughly air-sealed prior to installing insulation. Robust and continuous air control is critical to a high-performance thermal enclosure. The existing insulation must be removed to provide access to the ceiling plane for air sealing. Debris and dust should also be removed so that sealants will have good adhesion. All cracks, seams and holes should be sealed using caulk or spray-foam sealants.

Bruno B. (54) Sure, you can dial down the thermostat and get used to wearing bulky sweaters indoors to cut costs. But if you’ve got an unfinished attic, giving it proper insulation is one of the simplest ways to keep a lid on your heating bill this season. “It’s a DIY project you can tackle in a weekend, and the savings you’ll get add up every year,” says TOH general contractor Tom Silva. The Department of Energy estimates that a properly insulated attic can shave 10 to 50 percent off your heating bill. And it works the opposite way for warm climates; in summer, it helps stabilize your house’s indoor temps to keep cooling needs in check.

Always allow for bottom drainage. Bob Yapp has a class on Storm Window construction (with the removable panels)and there is information on John Leek’s blog. Interior storm/air panels (see Leeke’s blog) can be helpful if the windows are leaky.
