The standard procedure is to insulate the ceilings of unheated crawlspaces and the walls of heated crawlspaces. To reduce moisture migration if there’s no slab, a 6-mil polyethylene vapor barrier should be laid on the ground in both cases. At least 1 sq. ft. of ventilation should be installed for each 1,500 sq. ft. of floor area. For more information, see How to Install a Vapor Barrier in a Crawl Space. There are regional differences and various codes and interpretations for insulating crawlspaces and attics. Contact a local building official to make sure your house stays code-compliant.

So, when you’re adding insulation to an existing attic that has insulation, you’ll want to use an unfaced type of material. In that way, you won’t have to worry about that moisture trap. And all you have to do is get a few rolls of this, roll it out perpendicular over the ceiling joist that you have in your attic, and then you’ve created that insulation barrier that’s going to save you money, summer or winter.
Benefits of reflective or radiant barriers: Though this type of insulation works better in warmer climates than in cool, the average savings per home is around 10% (or $150) in terms of cooling costs. Add to that nominally more when combined with other conventional insulation types.

Owens Corning’s unbonded loosefill insulation products (AttiCat®, ProCat®, PROPINK® L77) use materials that are in abundant supply and leverage high levels of recycled content. Sand is a major raw material in glass manufacturing and Owens Corning is committed to seek out sources in reasonable proximity to its operations. Purchasing recycled glass prevents material from being sent to landfill while serving as an outlet for glass that is no longer in service. Unbonded loosefill products use a negligible amount of organic inputs and therefore are exempt from the USDA organic certification requirement.

Cost: Depending on the type and brand you choose, and whether you select rolls or boxed, the average square foot of radiant barrier costs about 15 to 30 cents. So to cover a typical 500 square foot attic, you’ll likely spend $175 to $325, with double-sided barriers being slightly more expensive. To pay for a professional installation, add to that between $500 to $750.
