5.0 out of 5 stars 1 I want to buy an ENERGY STAR certified home Heat passes all too easily through a poorly insulated attic. In the winter, heated interior air rises naturally by convection and escapes into the attic through numerous air leaks. Conductive heat loss through the cold ceiling makes rooms directly beneath the attic even colder.

A sealed crawl space will reduce your chances of having mold or mildew problems, not to mention infiltrating of pests. For other types, it is a good idea to install a thin barrier of polyethylene on the underside of the insulation to prevent moisture from compromising your material. (Note that in some hot and/or humid regions, such sheeting may need to face the exterior side of your insulation.) Cacti & Tropical Plants You see, from a performance perspective the best attic is an empty attic, and I’ve worked to ensure that I don’t have anything in my attic except air. My wife and I have unloaded a lot items we seem to never use, which was partially inspired by the homeowners of our 2014 Best Small Home. I’ve designed other spaces in my home’s plan to store the seasonal items we actually do use in order to further relieve the demand on the attic space. I also plan to have few ceiling penetrations in the second floor of the house, which will make it easier to create an airtight ceiling plane below the attic-a critical component this type of insulating approach. All of that air sealing work can be accomplished rather easily and affordably. For complete information on air sealing and insulating an attic floor, read Mike Guertin’s article, “Attic Insulation Upgrade” on the process.

We insulate warehouses, offices, studio spaces & more. Since most homeowners are seeking to insulate previously built structures with drywall, blown-in insulation works best in the interior. A simple hole is cut, insulation is blown in, and the hole is sealed, leaving the room warmer and more efficient, at about $1.00 per square foot. You can also insulate when finishing a wall’s rooms as well — particularly with basements and garages. This is when batt insulation is particularly useful.

Like a lot of people, my remodeling work is driven largely by my budget. Similarly, I look for simple assemblies that yield solid, proven performance. That’s why I can say with confidence that the best way to insulate my attic is with inexpensive cellulose or fiberglass insulation applied over an airtight attic floor. It would also be my recommendation for any homeowner, builder or designer wondering how best to insulate their attic. Unfortunately, as suggested earlier, it’s not always possible.

Air infiltration is bad because it carries heat, but it can also force your house to draw up air from the ground. Homes with poor insulation draw up to 40% of their air from the ground, and if the crawl space is not properly insulated or has no vapor barrier, your crawl space will absorb moisture. This can lead to rot, pest infestations, and mold development among other issues.
